In this study, I examine the Swedish Bible Translation Bibel 2000 with particular stress on its translation team for the Old Testament and the collaborative translation process of the team. In the introductory chapter, I outline a theory for analysing the translation process. I start in the various trends in Translation studies and, particularly, in Translation sociology. I thus place this study in what Andrew Chesterman has termed a sociology of translating. In connection with this, I discuss the theory of thought style and thought collectives as outlined by the Polish sociologist Ludwik Fleck. I argue that this theory is applicable for analysing the collaborative work that the translation team for the Old Testament carried out. Furthermore, I argue that the Biblical Hebrew so-called anthropological keywords (words describing the human body and aspects thereof) pose certain translation problems for the translators, which means that these keywords are of special interest when it comes to analysing the translation process. In the second part of the study, I outline the prerequisities for the Old Testament translation team in form of Swedish Bible translation history, as well as certain trends in Bible translation theory and exegetical research on the anthropological keywords. I argue that this is important for understanding the contents of a certain thought style that can be said to characterise the work of the Old Testament translation team. The thought style is characterised as an interpretative framework which guides the translators’ appreciation of how the translation problems are to be solved. In the third part of the study, I analyse the translation of a number of selected texts. By reconstituting the macro level of the translation process (the work of the team over time) as well as the micro level (the translation of certain texts), I show that there is a very clear idea for the translators of how to solve the translation problems, and that conflicting views are consistently suppressed. The reconstitution is done with the help of a great deal av archival material, left from the work of the Old Testament translation team. With this material, it is possible to follow the collaborative translation process and thus understand how the particular translation Bibel 2000 came to be.
