Most of my research is carried out within the project ”Religion on the Border: Resistance, Adaptation and Dialogue in Colonial Mexico” (2006-2009), which is funded by Vetenskapsrådet (the Swedish Research Council). The aim of the project is to study the relations between parish priests and indigenous (predominantly Nahuatl speaking) parishioners in the archdiocese of Mexico and the diocese of Tlaxcala during the first half of the seventeenth century. The source material is found in the Archivo General de Indias in Seville, British Library in London, the Archivo General de la Nación in Mexico City and a number of Mexican church archives. Apart from a number of articles in English, Spanish and Swedish, the goal is to publish a monograph with the working title Church Life Between the Metropolitan and the Local: Parishes, Parishioners and Parish Priests in Seventeenth-Century Mexico.
Another part of my research is devoted to the activities of Mexican colonial bishops. In particular I am interested in sixteenth and seventeenth century pastoral visiation. Although some of these visitation records contain interesting data they have rarely been used by scholars. My aim is to publish a couple of articles in Spanish.
I am also working on a biograpical study on the Bishop of Guadalajara and Tlaxcala Alonso de la Mota y Escobar (1546-1625). The goal is to write a substantial article in Spanish.
Yet another research interest is seventeenth-century Nahuatl and Spanish petitions written by indigenous parishioners in order to present complaints against the parish clergy before the ecclesiastical court of law.
My doctoral dissertation (2002) also dealt with Mexican church history. It is a thematic biography of Alonso de Montúfar OP, Archbishop of Mexico 1554-1572, which analyses the discussions on how the church in Mexico should be organized. Should the church in sixteenth century Mexico be organized in exactly the same way as in Spain or did the so-called New World required new ways. The thesis Unification and Conflict: The Church Politics of Alonso de Montúfar, Archbishop of Mexico, 1554-1572 is available in full-text:
